I take it to be specious. Daniel dates to the second century BC, the 
Hellenistic era, with great libraries and schools in Athens, Alexandria, 
Pergammum and Antioch. That knowledge and travel had increased over the 
centuries was hardly a secret. It's true that they lacked the smug,
annoying 
certainty of being the greatest which the French Enlightenment managed so 
well, but I say good for them.
