One might add that if you pull the lever an infinite number of times, that

counts as long enough. Since an infinite universe has been and remains a 
strong possibility, it's something to bear in mind.

The contention that it is very, very unlikely for the first cell to form 
has some interesting sfnal consequences. It would lead to a situation
where 
if we found a way to travel to other star systems, we would find them 
devoid of life. However, planets ripe for terraforming might be there in 
abundance. Can anyone think of a case where this scenario is actually
used?
