Nope, if we are talking about proteins, actually there are a lot more 
than that, very very many more if you take isomers and folding into 
account. The rather dangerous version which forms the infectious agent 
for BSE (mad cow disease) showed up rather recently, for instance. 
(Google 'Prion') - luckily. If it had been the default/early form we'd 
likely be non-existent.

The protein databank has about 50k proteins with known structure. 
Whether you can glue a viable self-relicator together out of ANY 250 of 
those, only God knows, and she ain't telling. 8>.
