I can at least narrow down the series: it certainly happened in Anita
Blake novels (of course, it might have happened in other series).
Anita calls the thing "Mommie Dearest". It seems to be female but may
not be (probably isn't) human. She is not yet fully awake, but she's
slowly waking up.
