The graphic novel format's had a lot of more serious work, too -- 
movies like A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and ROAD TO PERDITION were based on 
comics.

If you want a serious fantasy epic in graphic novel form, the SANDMAN 
books that Konrad mentioned would be a good one to try.  FABLES, too, 
might appeal to someone who enjoyed GIRL GENIUS, though it's a 
different kind of thing.

HELLBOY and its spinoff series, B.P.R.D., might be good choices, too.  
There are quite a few volumes ofthose.
