	He had a wonderful and rare talent to express the feeling of 
discovery, invention, and innovation.  

	I *think* the first novel of his I read was either 2001 or 
2010 -- I have a weird habit of reading sequels first -- but remember 
how deeply they impressed me with the tone, conveying the sense of 
being things which actually happened rather than fiction.  

	The short story in which the beings of Venus find and only 
partially understand the last relic from Earth has haunted me ever 
since I first read it, particularly when I try to start writing most 
anything.
