Well, new users are coming in through, you guessed it, Google Groups.
If Google would shut the doors on the spammers, they'd be a positive
force. As it is, they just don't care, so it's eroding things. New
users that start with GG find some groups (many have no realization of
the difference between a Google forum and usenet groups) polluted with
spam and nothing they can do, so they leave.
We get lots of legitimate new users via GG in the programming groups.
It's the usenet method of choice for India and China.
