I can't understand why they didn't include "The Star" in the "seminal"
list. 
Among others that I really liked were "Earthlight" and "The Sentinel", the

latter more than 2001: A Space Odyssey (good though that is).  The
Sentinel 
was published in 1948, outside their arbitrary time frame.
