It's treatment of race is also pretty advanced for 1949.

The group of Arkansas blacks whom Ish meets on his travels are shown as
making a far better adjustment to the new situation than most of the white
people he meets, including, as he ruefully acknowledges, himself.

Later on, when he notices somewhat belatedly that Em is, in contem****ary
usage, "coloured", he dismisses this point with a shrug. Six decades ago,
a
lot of people wouldn't have - and I don't just mean in the Deep South.
