Incidentally, California, where EA is largely set, repealed its law
against
interracial marriage only in 1948, so when Stewart started writing it was
probably still on the books.

If Wiki is to be believed (<g>) 29 other states still had such laws at the
time of EA's publication, and all 16 Southern and "Border" states retained
them until quashed by the Supreme Court in 1967.
