Actually, I think it could be done if one focused on the British
Empire-like elements (I always envisioned the Sardaukar in crisp khaki
uniforms) and broke the first novel up into three separate movies:

 - movie 1 --- Dune: The Betrayal --- departure from Caladan (nifty
spaceflight sequences, lovely shots of Caladan from space), arrival on
Arrakis, introduction of characters, the betrayal and defeat of Duke
Leto's forces, Jessica and Paul escape into the desert
