Fate of SF as World Slides Down Back Side of Hubbert's Curve?

What happens to SF as it becomes clearer that the future will not be more
like Star Trek, but instead will be more like the past? Will newly hatched
14-yo boys lose interest in all that "futuristic space travel" stuff as it
becomes more clear that:

  -- Humanity will never go to the stars (probably not even one human
     will go to the stars)
  -- Instead of more and more every year, we can start to expect less and
     less
  -- Infinite progress is increasingly exposed as a fraying myth of our
     times, not really "how the universe actually works"
  -- The pace of scientific discovery, like the pace of everything, starts
     showing that it too obeys the law of diminisihing returns (which it
     has already started doing)
  -- Even CPUs have stopped doubling in clock speed every 18 months

Before we knew much about the planets in the Solar System, there was SF
about aliens on those planets. After we learned how inhospitable these are
to LAWKI, the SF switched to focus more on journies to distant stars,
planets, galaxies, instead of the weekly Saturn run. Will the genre now
lose
its appeal altogether to the demographic that becomes new SF readers?

My initiation to SF came after the switchover to distant stars had already
occurred. Later I did enjoy reading those old pulp novels from the Golden
Age full of steely-eyed rocket captains doing the Saturn run, so to speak,
but if I hadn't already been brought into the SF fold on "realistic"
futuristic novels, I might never have been able to appreciate these
oldies.
What happens to SF now when the new generation of kids are born into a
world
where going to the moon is something we "used to be able to do," but is
now
so far in the past as to be to them like ancient history, essentially in
the
same category as how we also "used to be able to" build monuments like the
Great Pyramid?
