A combination of my own filters and whatever news.individual.net is
doing has virtually eliminated the problem, without collateral damage.

Some people have firewall issues or use public computers at least some
of the time. I prefer not to denigrate someone merely for the tools
they use. The clueless can easily (perhaps too easily) be killfiled on
an individual basis. Besides, that's hardly confined to Google.
