That's a re-telling of the Apollo-Daphne myth.  Daphne was unwilling to 
marry Apollo and prayed to Zeus to be saved.  He turned her into a 
laurel tree, which is why the laurel is sacred to Apollo.  I have a John 
Foster original of the event hanging in my bedroom.  I think I bought it 
at Westercon about 10 years ago.
