Varley - Rolling Thunder

by lal_truckee <lal_truckee@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Mar 31, 2008 at 10:18 AM

Just finished Rolling Thunder.

I like Varley (particularly the Eight Worlds stories.) Rolling Thunder
is - as everyone has pointed out, Varley doing a Heinlein juvenile with
*** thrown in and as such it's quite good. The funny thing is that while
having 40 years of scientific advance at his fingertips Varley's
"bubble" drive unaccountably doesn't seem as "real" as Heinlein's
"torches."

But that's not why I post:
Clearly Varley intends Rolling Thunder to be in the Heinlein juvenile
genre, to the point of making homage to the Heinlein titles by using
them as phrases throughout the book, several in the last paragraph.

Query: Are all the Heinlein juveniles represented? I don't remember
Rocket****p Galileo, Space Cadet, Star Beast, nor Star****p Troopers but
did catch Farmer in the Sky and a I think all others. Are all represented?

Query: Did Varley do the same thing in the earlier books of the series
and I just missed it?
