Did any other pulp genres have a "New Wave"?

by ted@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Ted Nolan <tednolan>) Mar 31, 2008 at 07:35 PM

I was thinking of "New Wave" SF for some reason the other day, and of
how it brought "literary" techniques (and ***) to a genre that had
favored (and still does favor for the most part) a straight-forward
pulp(*)
based style of story-telling.

After that, it occurred to me to wonder if the other surviving pulp genres
had their own New Waves. I know there were "adult" westerns with more
*** and less clear-cut depictions of right & wrong, but I don't think
there
was any sytlistic experimentation. Since mystery writing has always had
more literary cachet than SF (everyone likes Chandler & Hammett..), I
would
have expected some sort of 60s reaction there. Was there one?

				Ted

(*) Yes, yes, SF, westerns & mysteries all pre-date pulp, Wells &
Stapledon weren't pulp writers etc that's not where I want to get bogged
down.
