He explicitely lifted them in multiple loads. It's the first real line
"When I got to the top of the building I found that the hurricane had
knocked some bricks off the top. So I rigged up a beam with a pulley
at the top of the building and hoisted up a couple of barrels full of
bricks."

Now he does say the barrels are full going up so the problem remains
unless we assume he overfilled for the way down. But there are at
least two barrels lifted and all the extras are coming back down in
one load.

I'm pretty sure I've seen other versions that avoid this problem by
having this be fini****ng up from an entire work-crew, so the crew
lifted the bricks and he's bringing all the extras down himself. I've
definitely seen at least two other versions of this story.
