In re the thread, "Scott Sigler's 'Infected'":
Well, I tried to read the Mobipocket-converted file of Sigler's novel
"Infected". Mobi will convert the free untagged-pdf file into a
reflowable e-book file. Alas, despite Mobi's valiant effort, the
conversion was defeated by ligatures and punctuation. They infested the
file.
Apparently, the art director/typographer uses a lot of 'f' ligatures
(fl, fi), and some very artistic apostrophes, etc. Reading the converted
text was like riding over a road filled with potholes. Just as you were
getting into the _fl_ow, an 'fl' would show up as a blank box character
and stop the _fl_ow. [1] I gave up after a couple of dozen pages.
Infecto delenda est.
I guess I'll never know if Sigler's book is any good, unless at some
future point I buy it in paperback, but 'so many books, so little time'.
Sadly,

[1] Please, no responses about how if I just programed a dozen or two
EMACS macros and a couple of Perl scripts I could fix that. Yes, I
could. In fact I could do it Basic, Fortran, Forth, or probably with
Unix lexical functions or VMS commands. I could easily do it in CDC line
editor, if someone has a Cyber 70 installation that still works. But I'm
not going to, because all I wanted to do was read enough of the book to
see if it was any good.
