As some of you may have heard, Disney's lineup for 2012 includes an
adaptation of the short story "King of the Elves" by none other than
Phillip K. Dick. On the surface this is a simple story about an
ordinary guy (he work in a gas station) who is recruited by elves to
help them fight their sworn enemies, the trolls, and become their
king.
But this being a Dick story I can't help feeling there's more to it.
at some point the hero ends up killing a friend of his, who later
turns out to be a troll in disguise. This got me thinking. Could it be
Dick is describing a mentally deranged protagonist who is only
imagining adventures with elves and trolls, but in reality is killing
innocent people thinking they are trolls? Or am I reading too much
into a simple story based on my assumptions of what a Dick story ought
to be like? I know Dick wrote some children's books, but I never read
them.
What are your thought on Disney's choice of source material to adapt?
