the parameters:
* i have 136 linear feet of bookshelves lining the walls of my
basement. they are full. I could conceivably move to free-standing
library shelves, but that might be too much for my long-suffering
wife.
* I have 27 feet devoted to SF. I may be able to free up some more
room for SF by paring down other sections, but I do have lots of
interests and sf is only one. assume no more than a 10% increase.
* I shelve fantasy in a separate section and have about 10 linear
feet devoted to it. "I know it when I see it."
* I file some nonfiction books by sf authors together with SF, e.g.
David Brin's Transparent Society, so all the books by a single author
are clumped together.
* my current collection is simply the ad hoc result of all the books
that have survived years of moves. until now, there has been no
collection strategy.
* I was introduced to science fiction by browsing in my grandfather's
complete run of ANALOG 1955-1975 (now, alas, lost).
* I like space opera.
these are the SF books I currently have beginning with "B".
