I thought it was like the second book where that was discovered?  That is,
the fact that whozerface could do sorcery, and so they subsequently
did cross-training.  But maybe I'm misremembering, since I can't seem
to remember whozerface's name at the moment (but then, names are one of
the things I'm really horrid at remembering, so oh well).

In any event... yes, really early on.  And even the initial presentation
of completely distinct species seemed fishy all along.
