Non-fans may not have recognized Asimov -as an SF writer-, but he wrote a
good
deal more nonSF than he ever did SF, and many recognized him for his
various
science explanations. Or his mysteries. Or his annotations of various
classic
works. Or etc etc etc.

Clarke's recognition I can see simply as ripples from the movie 2001 -
that
reached a lot of people who weren't 'fans' as such...
