Thats a question only non-fans can answer.
How much of a non-fan are we talking about.
There are Spidey fans who never heard of Gwen Stacy.
Who wouldn't know Heinlein for Hubbard.
The dotty aunt or grandma who call comics, funny books
and think SF is all Buck Rogers.  or Stephen King (which I
call him more of a horror writer than an SF writer)

There are some names that are universal for any generation
Like if naming detectives, everyone knows Sherlock Holmes
but many may not know Travis McGee
Universal SF writers would include HG Wells, Jules Verne
and Edgar Rice Burroughs
Fantasy:  Baum, Rowling and Tolkein (because of the movies)

I am a serious NON-fan of Romances and could still name Barbara
Cartland, Danielle Steele, which is pretty pathetic
and which I have nor ever will read which is just fine with me.

Westerns, is there anyone else other than Zane Grey or Lamour?
