Asimov?  Sure.  Mainly because the new books he had on the stands
weren't science fiction.  Plenty of non-fans of my acquaintance
knew who he was, if only for his "Asimov's Guide To [insert nouns here]"
books.

Clarke certainly became better known after "2001".

If you mean, say, as famous as Mitchener, probably not.  But even
non-fans picked up the occasionaly sf book.
