F&SF that I Read in 2007: P

by jdnicoll@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (James Nicoll) Apr 19, 2008 at 05:19 PM

Title Author Publication
                                                            Date

DEVICES AND DESIRES Parker, K.J.

This is the first book in the ENGINEER trilogy. An engineer
is forced to flee his home city after violating one of its basic
laws. His love for his wife leads him to launch a complicated and
heartless plan, using two barbarian kingdoms as pawns.

Amusing but I don't believe those laws will lead to the
international situation we see and the "barbarians" talked just
like the city folk. People who want strong female characters
should look elsewhere.

THE WIT AND WISDOM OF DISCWORLD Pratchett, Terry 10/1/2007
                                  Briggs, Stephen

This is aimed at all those readers who like Pratchett's sense
of humour but who find reading the actual Discworld books themselves
to be too much of a chore. Briggs collects all the bits that he thinks
were most notable from thirty-six Pratchett novels.

My lawyers inform me that a more frank review of the basic
concept behind this book and ones like it (LAZARUS LONG IS A BORING
OLD WINDBAG AND YOU CAN TOO) could run into the problem that truth
is not a defense in British libel law. I reserve the right to do to
people who corner me to read me lines out of this book the same that
I do to someone who thought I wanted to hear anyone who wasn't a
member of the Python troupe quote Monty Python routines.

BLOOD ENGINES Pratt, T.A. 9/25/2007

A witch has to find a plot token in San Francisco before a
rival kills her. Unfortunately the man who had it has been murdered
and (somewhat suprisingly for an paranormal romance) is not very
helpful.
