The problem, I think, is that non-SF readers will still think of SF as
being Bradbury, Asimov, and Clarke. (Maybe Heinlein and Herbert if
they're ex-SF readers rather than never reading it.) That is, all the SF
writers they know of are dead or did their best work fifty years ago (or
both).

Of people who write somewhat SFnally, I'd expect Crichton, Gibson, and
Stephenson are pretty well known among general fiction readers, but I
doubt they're generally thought of as SF writers.
