F&SF that I Read in 2007: R

by jdnicoll@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (James Nicoll) Apr 20, 2008 at 01:09 PM

Title Author Publication
                                                            Date

ONCE BITTEN, TWICE SHY Rardin, Jennifer 10/8/2007

Kick-ass girl heroine guards vampire counter-terrorist operative
in this BUFFY meets 24 paranormal romance. I don't remember this at all
and had to look it up.

STAR WARS: DEATH STAR Reaves, Michael
                                  Perry, Steve

This is STAR WARS, retold from the points of view of the volunteers
and conscripts serving in the Death Star. It wasn't bad.

STAR****P: MERCENARY Resnick, Mike 12/1/2007

STAR****P: PIRATE Resnick, Mike 12/5/2006

Two entries in a series about a str****p crew forced to
mutiny against and then flee from their oppressive government. Having
done so, they need to find a way to make a living.

	I don't care for Resnick's SF.

VISUAL JOURNEYS Reynolds, Eric T. 6/25/2007

Eighteen pieces of space art and the eighteen SF stories
that they inspired.

I thought the art was quite variable (and if I recall correctly,
one story has Jupiter being exploited for its H2) but also that this was
worth serious consideration.

MALEDICTE Robbins, Lane 5/29/2007

This fantasy features True Love, vengeance, cross-dressing
duelists and if I recall correctly, a lesson in why you should think
very carefully before swearing oaths on dark gods.

SET THE SEAS ON FIRE Roberson, Chris 8/1/2007

An 19th century British naval expedition runs into an unexpected
supernatural phenomenon.

	This left me cold.

DEEPWOOD Roberson, Jennifer 7/1/2007

The second in the Karavans series. The characters have to deal
with the aftermath of the magical disaster that ended the first book.

WINTERBIRTH Ruckley, Brian 9/1/2007

I have no memory of this book.

BAD MONKEYS Ruff, Matt 8/1/2007

A young murderer spins a fantastic tale of world-spanning
secret conspiracies to her skeptical psychiatrist.

	I couldn't suspend my disbelief.
