In the first place, they're wrong; the Church doesn't defiy Mary.

In the second place, they're right, because if the Church *did* 
deify Mary, that would be wrong.

Not that certain individual butter-for-brains Catholics don't try
on occasion.  I remember one woman at St. Mary Magdalene's who
used to go around trying to get people to sign a *petition* to
the Pope asking him to invest Mary with various titles
essentially proclaiming her Christ's equal.  One was
"Co-Redemptrix of Mankind," IIRC.  I don't think she ever got any
signatures.

I'm reminded of a character in one of Anthony Boucher's whodunits,
an elderly misandric nun in whose slightly heretical worldview
the Queen of Heaven graciously allocates a subordinate position
to her Son.
