FINALLY saw it on the shelf at local B&N, trade paperback format, and
grabbed a copy.
Blech! How did that get published in the first place?
I'm something of a GC fan, though I haven't read more than about half
his books, I like his characters, plots, telegraphic style. But
Dragon - just plain doesn't work. Four major parallel subplots, way
too many characters and ****ps and planets, way too many characters
(even if most of them are virtual), too many double-crosses,
technology too strong and yet too primitive and never satisfactorily
explained, some hints at clairvoyance (or something) that are never
picked up and should probably have been edited out, ... yeah, some
clever stuff in there, but in desparate need of major rewrite.
Hints of Skylark, Forever War, maybe a tad of Dune, a little cyberpunk
echo, ... nothing necessarily wrong with that but the sum was really
disappointing.
