    I think the problem -- which got worse later on, although _Brain Wave_

is ISTR his first novel -- is that around chapter 2 of the novels,
usually, 
one character would sit down and deliver a long lecture that would
establish 
the background.  And you couldn't skip those, because there was im****tant 
material there.
