White Wolf's _Mage: the Ascension_ RPG was based on something very much
like
this - including both technological-magic and traditional-magic searches
for
Ascension. And several novels got written based on it, including one
trilogy
that dealt with how they wound up the series (all of White Wolf's "first
generation" RPGs got ended together a few years ago: the werewolves had
their
Apocalypse, the vampires their Gehenna, the mages their Ascension, etc.
White
Wolf then rebooted the games at a rather lower power level with a rather
less
coherent-between-games set of storylines...)
