ARC = Advance Reading Copy
These are sent out to reviewers a few months before publication.  
They usually look just like trade paperbacks (though I've seen a 
couple massmarket sized ARCs, and I think once a hardcover ARC),
but don't have barcodes and usually say "Not For Sale" on the front 
cover (sometimes also "Uncorrected Page Proofs: Do Not Quote").
And Andrew was tempted to buy it in the same way some people are 
tempted by legal addictive drugs.
