Hi, folks, quoting a previous poster ...
"In the past I've criticized certain authors for the extreme amounts of
bloat present in their books. Most notably David Weber, who regularly
padded 350 pages of plot into an 800 page novel...."
In respect of this book, I have to agree. Great plot, great characters,
some terrific ideas, etc. etc., but a third or more TOO LONG. I found
myself
skipping pages to "get on with it", without missing much. I think a bit
of
careful editing would have been good here.
[SPOILER ..???] Why have different groups of characters discussing the
same
thing, in detail, over again? Why go into pages of detailed military
strategy, when we got the point after the first page or so? Is the
author
trying to prove that he's done his research?
Having said that, I enjoyed the book and recommend it as a good read
(perhaps on a long-haul flight?), and there seems to be scope for a
sequel.
