The first one /might/ be Colin Wilson's _Space Vampires_. I don't say 
this with any confidence (it's been decades) and it was not a a book or 
an author I'd suggest to a twelve-year old. When were you in 7th grade?

The second could be almost anything - a bunch of Jack Vance would fit 
the description.
