Yes - in a way, Pullman's daimones taken a couple steps further. The soul
as
literal spirit, and what might follow from that. (And no, I don't think
the
main guy Has No Fury At All; I think it's "just" one of a kind that nobody
else has ever seen and he's never learned how to command or communicate
with
it. Yet. But see the Interesting Scene right near the end of book 3.
Caveat:
I have not read book 4 at all yet, if it's out, and it may run roughshod
over
my thinking.)
