I fell in love with the magic in _Furies of Calderon_. It seemed like
the perfect system for a tabletop RPG: all magic done by giving orders
to sentient elemental beings bound to your character, and gaining
levels could increase the stats of your character's furies instead of
the character theirself (neatly avoiding that hitpoint nonsense). And
having multiple furies would be like multi-classing.

Unfortunately, the second book revealed that "each person has one or
two strong, named furies" only applied to folks on the frontier; most
everyone else had lots of unnamed furies of every type, and did the
usual "wi****ng makes it so" style magic.

Actually, all the clues of what's going on are there in book three;
see final comments from Isana and Gaius for the rest of the story.
