ISFDB and your memory accord with my bookshelf. The original
publication is the 1987 Houghton Mifflin hardcover, 0-395-43782-2,
which at 550 pages I thought was incredibly long at the time. (The
copy I have, somewhat the worse for wear, appears to be the first
printing -- I don't know if it was ever reprinted in this form.) The
UK-and-rest-of-world paperback was published as a 673-page
standard-size paperback in 1988 by Pan, 0-330-30309-0; I appear to
have the first printing -- on acid paper -- of this as well[1]. (The
1987 UK hardcover was published by William Collins.)

I believe that the story has been told here previously that when the
U.S. paperback rights were put out to bid, the high bid (from Del Rey)
was predicated on splitting the book in two.

[1] My copy of which, for obscure reasons, bears a price tag of FIM
51. No idea how much that would be in modern EUR, but at the time it
would have been over USD 10.
