Nonsequitur, but two weeks ago today I was standing on the site of the
great temple of Artemis at Ephesus.  It was a sunken field, overgrown
with grass and nettles, with a few scattered blocks of masonry.
Someone had randomly piled up some unrelated segments to make an
uneven column.  Local hustlers were meeting the tour buses, some of
them trying to sell obviously fake ancient coins.

The temple was once one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Sic transit...

One the other hand, what remains of Ephesus from the Roman period was
fascinating.  And the Turks are the most friendly and stranger-
welcoming folk I have ever met.
