I have to say that I found that entire subplot... odd.  You 
have the dashing young sailor who falls in love with a girl 
he sees through a window who is being held captive by a very 
creepy old guy.  Young man manages to rescue young girl 
without a whole lot of trouble, stashes her in a safe place, 
she says "and will things really be ok after this" (or 
something roughly to that effect), he goes to get traveling 
methods, and that's the last that we ever see of that 
storyline.  Oddly unsatisfying.  The fact that the young man 
only had one, not-very-interesting song, didn't help.
