The United Way is nothing more than strong-arm extortion combined with
a skimming operation. The chapters are managed locally but all work
the same way. They first approach a top executive of a company and say
"Wouldn't you like to have this beautiful plaque for your office
telling the world what a great humanitarian you are? All you have to
do is get your employees to 'voluntarily contribute' to the United Way
and it is yours. Your fellow big shots will be most impressed."

So Mr. Executive, desperate for another boost to his fragile ego,
sends all his employees the United Way contribution package. Along
with it goes a subtle hint to all lower managers that if participation
is not sufficient for him to get that fancy plaque then Mr. Executive
will be quite disappointed. Even those employees who are familiar with
the scam will kick in a couple of bucks to the United Way just to
avoid getting their immediate boss in trouble.

Next U-W doles out the swag to various charities which meet their
"standards", after first skimming a nice chunk off the top for
"administration costs". This can run as high as 25% of the take,
depending upon the greed level of the local U-W management. If you
check out the pay levels of the U-W executives you will see that
charity does indeed "begin at home".

Also don't believe that crap that you can 'designate' your
contribution to go to the charity which you specify. U-W will earmark
your contribution for that charity, and THEN deduct it from the amount
they've already decided on. Designating your contribution does NOT get
your favorite charity one additional cent, although the U-W wants you
to think that it does.

Before sending money to any "charity", check them out here:

You may be surprised on how they spend donations Personally,. I
regularly contribute to the Salvation Army, the USO, and several other
organizations I know and trust. As for those arm-twisters over at
United Way, F**K them and the horse they rode in on.
