That's why I asked. I like to think of myself as the kind of person who
knows the most common terms dealing with supernatural phenomena already;
one who only needs to ask about the really hairy stuff.

I'm the other way around. After getting the word, and reading the
article in English Wikipedia, I'm not entirely sure why Julian May used
that exact word. Thankfully, the Andy Love guy (email) gave me a page
reference, so if I want to (and I think I do want to), I can go re-read
that chapter of the novel.
