IIRC, in John Barnes' _Armies of Memory_, a fair portion of the human
race has decided that virtual reality is the Right Way to Live, the
protagonists are (for obvious reasons) of the opinion that this is
not the case, and at least one of them is a former VR-dweller who
decided to return to thinking-meat status.

This was more backstory and setting than actual story, but it might
be something like what you're looking for.
