Clearly the -ism practiced by Lenin, Stalin, Mao et al. is godless, but
it certainly looked as if it had been designed by evil people who had
learned a lot about the oppressive techniques of religions that had been
able to control the state. It was designed, not to free people from the
shackles of religion, but to replace the oppression of religion with the
oppression of their own burning desire to control. 

Despite the worst efforts of religionists to equate atheism and
communism, the equivocation fails. Atheism is merely the lack of a
belief in gods and a failure to buy into religiosity. Communism was
incidentally atheistic because religious organizations were powerful
institutions that were opponents of these revolutions and able to break
the totalitarian regime if allowed to, but, as some religious
organizations have proven over the past, it is possible for religious
organizations to make peace with totalitarians to keep an outward show
of independence and make it easier for the totalitarians to control the
country and triumph in their evil will.
