Hello rasfwolk,
I'm trying to remember the title of a short story that I read in the 80s,
collected in an anthology that was probably at least 5-10 years older. It
involved a zoo on Earth, full of alien specimens, one of which was a
large snail-like creature kept in captivity on a bed of moss from its own
world. There is some discussion of the risks that extra-terrestrial
contamination could pose the planet (I think); anyway, the precautions
taken are insufficient, as one day the glass is found broken and the
specimen gone...
....and then the deaths begin.
(I'm not sure if leather suits were required in the end; that could just
be me confusing this story with anti-Stirge precautions or how one
catches notules, as the policeman said to the gentleman in chaps. ;-)
Any help gratefully received!
Sincerely,
Johnny T.
